Famous for the extinct volcano with which it shares its name, the Puy-de-Dôme department in Auvergne is situated in the Massif Central and boasts more than 80 volcanic craters. Puy-de-Dôme also includes large sections of two regional parks, the Parc des Volcans d'Auvergne and the Parc Livradois-Forez. Those with a passion for the great outdoors are spoilt for choice here and even have the option to try hanggliding at the top of the Puy de Dôme volcano. The department is also home to Thiers, famous for its knives and cutlery industry, and both the town's museum and the workshops along the Vallée des Rouets are worth a visit.
